Farming technology today has changed drastically from what farming technology was in the past. In 1793, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, which was extremely influential for farming's advancement. The cotton gin allowed 1,000 pounds of cotton to be cleaned in the time it took one man to clean five pounds by hand.

The Sam Davis Plantation is considered the most important historical site in Smyrna, Tennessee. It is located on 168 acres of farmland that was bought in the early 1800s. The plantation's original owner was Charles Davis, Sam Davis's father. In 1860, the Sam Davis Plantation had 51 African American slaves that lived and worked on the site. African American slaves played an extremely important role in harvesting crops. In the early 1800s slaves were the reason so many crops were being produced. Before the tractor, slaves were the main source of the workers that tended and harvested to the fields and increased production rates.

Batey Farms, a local pork and berry distributor in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, has been in the family farming business dating back to 1807. Batey's farm land was obtained through a Revolutionary war land grant. The first form of technology used by Batey Farms was running water and electricity. These technologies of the past advanced to new age GPS, field mapping, and data collection that helped show variable rate seed, fertilizer and chemical placement.
